Google discontinues Gmail’s Basic HTML View due to concerns that it may eventually shut down its email service

Google users can now relax as recent speculation about the end of Gmail has been clarified. Although the email service will remain, a particular feature is being discontinued. Google has announced that Gmail’s Basic HTML view will be phased out by January 2024, according to information on the company’s support page.

The basic HTML view of Gmail ends

Contrary to widespread speculation, X’s purported email claiming “Gmail’s journey is coming to an end” is debunked. The worry was unnecessary for most users, as the default “new” Gmail view has been in use for a long time. Unless people actively choose the “basic HTML” view, their Gmail experience will remain unchanged, Techcrunch reports.

For those unfamiliar, the basic HTML view provided users with a stripped down version of Gmail, handy for low connection situations or simple email checking. However, this feature will now be retired and Gmail will automatically switch to the standard view after the January 2024 deadline.

The email notifying users of this change clarifies that the basic HTML views are outdated versions that were replaced by modern successors more than a decade ago. The HTML version lacks several features in the standard view, such as chat, spell check, search filters, hotkeys, and rich formatting. Despite these limitations, it served its purpose for users in certain scenarios.

Currently, using the HTML version will try to get a message from Google stating that it is designed for “slower connections and older browsers”. Users are asked to confirm their preference for the standard version.

While Google is ditching this feature, the tech giant is still committed to improving its products with AI-powered features. Recent developments include the Duet AI feature to help users write emails, and the integration of the Bard chatbot with Google accounts, allowing users to query their email history. Although the basic HTML view fades into oblivion, Google continues its journey towards the integration of artificial intelligence into its range of services.
